What Are the Signs of an Irregular Period?

Most menstrual cycles last about 28 days. The first day of your period begins day one. Around day 11, a woman is at her most fertile, and at day 14 ovulation (the descent of the egg) usually occurs. Not every woman runs on exactly the same cycle, though. The period itself can last anywhere from two to seven days; the full cycle can be as short as 21 days or as long as 45, depending on age and the female.

As a teenager or while beginning menopause, periods can become irregular as hormones shift and change. This might mean more or less days between periods, longer or shorter cycles, alterations in things you normally expect from periods like cramps or mood swings, or all of the above.

However, not every irregular period is “normal.” Extensive stress, poor eating, and other health problems can be the cause of irregular periods. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Office on Women’s Health, “other serious health problems, such as uterine fibroids, polyps, or even cancer” may be the cause, so be sure to talk to your doctor if you notice ongoing irregularities.

Other signs of irregularity surrounding the menstrual cycle might include spotting (light bleeding) particularly before or after your period, heavier periods than you’re used to, longer periods, or vaginal bleeding after completing menopause.
