Tattoo Removal: Choosing a Dermatologist

Not all tattoo removal specialists are created equal, and if you’re not careful you can find yourself going to someone who doesn’t have the experience or tools to give you the quality results you want. When choosing a dermatologist for your procedure, it pays to do your homework and research your options. Not only will you increase your chances of finding a qualified specialist, but you might end up saving some money in the process as well. Here are four questions to ask yourself before you make a decision about where to have your tattoo removal done.

What are their qualifications?

Just because someone is a dermatologist doesn’t mean that they are qualified as a tattoo removal specialist as well. This procedure requires additional training, and you absolutely want to see a specialist with certification in laser operation—ideally from the American Board of Laser Medicine and Surgery. Clinics know that patients are concerned about their qualifications, so most will be more than happy to discuss their specialists’ training. It’s never a good sign if clinic staff members are hesitant to share this information with you.

What previous experience do they have?

You want to find a dermatologist who has performed tattoo removal procedures for several years with regularity. A specialist who has only been working for a few months and only performs one removal a week isn’t likely to inspire the confidence you’re looking for. This is a delicate procedure and you want your tattoo removal specialist to be able to complete the process in his or her sleep (although preferably awake).

What sort of laser do they use?

Unless you have a background in lasers, determining the quality of one can be a bit difficult. If possible, ask to see the laser before you schedule a removal session and pay attention to what it looks like. Does it appear old and bulky or new and sleek? Obviously you’ll want a dermatologist using the most advanced technology possible, so be aware of things like this. Ideally your dermatologist will own a q-switched Nd:YAG laser; this is considered the gold standard of tattoo removal.

What is their cost?

You definitely don’t want to sacrifice quality for cost, but you’ll probably find that equally-qualified dermatologists don’t always charge the same rates. Shop around and get consultations with several specialists in your area. Chances are you’ll end up saving some money with this approach, as opposed to going with the first qualified dermatologist you find.
