Recovering from a Stroke

It is important to understand that the recovering from a stroke will be different with everyone. Depending on the severity of your stroke, rehabilitation may take months to years. Regardless of the severity, you will have to monitor your health much closer for the rest of your life.

Physical Treatment

A stroke is a particularly dangerous health incident because it affects various regions of the brain. Strokes often impair the physical abilities of patients in ways that include temporary or permanent loss of limb use. After a stroke, patients will often undergo intense physical therapy to regain the use of their arms and legs. The duration of such treatment depends on the length of time a person was bedridden or unconscious and the severity of the stroke. This process may take a few weeks to years. If you are such a person undergoing stroke physical therapy, you may be trained to use walking aids or participate in robot therapy to help you to retrain your arms and legs.

Communication Treatment

Stroke patients may undergo different types of communication treatment. Exercising the brain is also critical in regaining mobility in limbs and, in severe cases, to relearn how to speak and walk. If a stroke is severe enough, a person may have to relearn all basic motor functions from eating to writing. These patients may recognize loved ones but no longer have the ability to comprehend everyday objects and concepts. Communication exercises will aid in a faster recovery.

Mental Treatment

A psychological evaluation may be performed regardless of the severity of your stroke. Having a stroke is life-changing for everyone, and each person is affected differently. Some struggle with the reality of their new physical restrictions; others dislike the need to change their diets. Stroke patients may be uncomfortable being vulnerable and dependent on others. Speaking with a therapist and joining support groups often helps cope with these aspects of recovery.

The Long-Term Journey

If you had a stroke, you know that your life is changed forever. Your loved ones might treat you differently. You may have to give up some of your most beloved foods and beverages. You will have to begin exercising and monitoring your diet for the rest of your life. Perhaps the most challenging obstacle is that you will have to greatly reduce, if not eliminate altogether, the stresses in your life.

A stroke may change your life, but it does not mean your life is over. Your road to recovery may be longer or shorter than others, but with hard work and dedication, you can resume a highly satisfying life with those you love.
