Is Bacterial Vaginosis an STI?

Bacterial vaginosis is an infection that is caused by a change in the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina. This is a very common infection for women who are between the ages of 15 and 45.

Even though sexual activity can upset the balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria, which can lead to bacterial vaginosis, women who have never had sex can also be affected by bacterial vaginosis. Therefore, the condition is not considered a sexually transmitted infection. However, bacterial vaginosis can increase your risk for contracting other sexually transmitted infections.

Having safe sex and limiting your number of sexual partners can lower your risk for developing bacterial vaginosis as well.
