Link between polycystic ovary syndrome and cancer

Does Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Cause Cancer?

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition that affects a woman’s reproductive system and hormonal balance. Although PCOS does not directly cause cancer, it does cause irregular menstrual cycles which can contribute to a higher risk of some types of cancer.

The risk of endometrial cancer is three times as high for women with polycystic ovary syndrome. This is because irregular or absent periods cause the endometrium (or lining of the uterus) to build up and become thicker, which increases the likelihood of a cancerous tumor developing.

PCOS can also increase the risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. This is because polycystic ovary syndrome can lead to a lack of ovulation, which is linked to an increased risk for both breast and ovarian cancers.
