The Dangers of Multivitamin Overdose

Generally, if you are healthy you do not need multivitamin supplements. However, supplements appear attractive and necessary to consumers because manufacturers advertise promises such as increased energy, weight loss, or reduced stress.

If you do decide to take supplements, it is important to keep in mind that they are not strictly regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration. Those who have a medical condition, or are currently taking other drugs, herbs, or supplements should consult with their doctor before starting new supplements. Because although multivitamins may seem harmless, it is possible to overdose.

Here is an overview of symptoms associated with an overdose of two common supplements: vitamin D and folic acid.

Vitamin D Overdose

Vitamin D is vital for the body’s absorption of calcium. It can be found in foods such as salmon, eggs, milk, and other products fortified with the nutrient. However, almost all cases of vitamin D overdose are due to supplements.

Vitamin D toxicity is the result of a buildup of calcium in your blood, known as hypercalcemia. The symptoms of hypercalcemia include poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, weakness, increased urination, and kidney problems. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking the vitamin D supplement and contact your doctor immediately.

Folic Acid Overdose

Folic acid is a B vitamin important for various functions in the body, especially for promoting a healthy pregnancy. Pregnant mothers with folic acid deficiency are at risk of having a baby with birth defects, but prenatal vitamins ensure they receive adequate amounts of this essential nutrient.

An overdose of folic acid is rare, but it can occur in those taking pregnancy supplements. The daily recommendation is around 400 micrograms, but you should absolutely not consume more than 1000 micrograms daily.

Side effects from an overdose are serious. They include: fever, weakness, shortness of breath, tightness in chest, trouble breathing, wheezing and changes in skin suck as redness, rash, or itching. Seek medical attention right away if any of these occur while you are taking prenatal vitamins.
