The Best Products to Treat Razor Burn

Razor burn is an uncomfortable, red rash that can sometimes show up a few minutes after shaving. Fortunately, you can treat razor burn and reduce the stinging and irritation it may cause. Here are a few different treatment methods that will help you stop feeling the burn.

Cold Compresses

Applying a cold compress such as a cold, wet cloth or a pack of ice to the affected area, soothes the razor burn and helps it heal quickly. A compress can be used up to three times a day until your problems subside.

Moisturizer

Applying moisturizer to the area daily will offer relief and reduce the pain of burn. However, you should avoid alcohol-based products because they can make the problem worse. There are two types of moisturizer that are particularly good for treating razor burn:

  • Moisturizer containing glycolic acid: This type of product has been shown to reduce razor bumps and enables users to continue shaving daily without further irritation.
  • Moisturizer containing salicylic acid: You may recognize this type of product as an anti-acne treatment, but it has proven to treat razor burn effectively as well.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel is a great product for treating sunburns, but it works well for razor burn too. The gel soothes the affected area by reducing swelling and irritation. Aloe vera also promotes healing by forming a barrier which protects the skin from outside infection.

Natural Oils

Natural oils, such as tree tea oil or coconut oil, can help reduce razor burn. Rub a little bit of the oil on the affected area daily to help to moisturize the skin. If you've never used natural oils before, try applying a small amount to your hand before using it to treat razor burn. An unexpected allergic reaction will just make your problems worse.

Baby Products

Products used for babies, such as baby oil or diaper rash cream can also be used on your razor burn to offer you relief and healing by moisturizing irritated skin. First, apply baby oil to the shaved skin and then gently pat yourself dry. Once dry, apply the diaper rash cream to the area you shaved.

Aftershave Lotion or Balm

Aftershave products are available for both men and women and come in various types across multiple price ranges. All you have to do is apply the lotion or balm after shaving to prevent and reduce irritation from razor burn.

Petroleum Jelly

Although temporary, a razor burn can be extremely painful. Petroleum jelly will relieve that stinging pain you may have from a bad case of razor burn. Apply a thin layer to the affected area—after a few minutes, the burn should be hydrated and moisturized. You can then wipe away the excess petroleum jelly with a wet cloth.
