Preparing for a Tummy Tuck

If you're considering a tummy tuck, which is also known as an abdominoplasty, to eliminate saggy stomach skin, you should be aware of the required preparations. Below are the steps you would likely take before undergoing a tummy tuck procedure.

Visit with Your Surgeon

Your surgeon will ask you to stop by before your procedure in order to go over any important instructions and perform a few simple tests. The most common of these tests is a complete blood count, which will identify any pre-existing problems that may cause complications during your surgery. If you’re a premenopausal woman, this meeting will also involve a pregnancy test, since this is obviously not a procedure that can be done if you’re pregnant.

Quit Smoking

Smoking greatly increases your risk of tissue necrosis after the surgery, which can lead to all sorts of complications during the healing process—like infection or loss of skin. However, it’s best to quit before your tummy tuck in order to give your body (and mind) time to adjust to the changes.

Prep Your Home

You won’t be in any condition to care for your home immediately after your surgery, so consider taking care of all the things you won’t be able to do beforehand instead. This includes housecleaning, preparing post-surgery medications, and moving household items to hip level or higher. Bending over won’t be a possibility with your incision.

Arrange Transportation and Supervision

Even though some surgeons perform tummy tucks as outpatient procedures, you’ll be unable to drive yourself home regardless. Make sure that you have a friend or family member lined up to drive you home after the procedure so you don’t have to worry about making arrangements under the influence of anesthesia. It’s also best to find someone willing to stay with you for a day or two after your surgery.
