How Do Braces Work?

For most people, braces are one big step toward getting that perfect smile. In this day of modern conveniences, braces are becoming more and more common. This is especially evident in elementary and middle schools, where a large percentage of the children wear braces at one time or another. However, braces are not just limited to children, but they are often seen on adults who were not able to correct their tooth and bite problems during adolescence.

Despite the great popularity of braces, it is normal for a person to want to know more detailed information about braces rather than blindly trusting an orthodontist to fix a crooked smile.

What are the different types of braces?

There are two main categories of braces: removable and irremovable. Irremovable braces are the more traditional kind, but removable braces are becoming increasingly common because they are less noticeable.

How do irremovable braces work?

There are many types of irremovable braces, as they generally achieve a straight smile faster. Nearly all irremovable braces work the same way with a few minor differences. First, special brackets are glued around the back teeth. Smaller brackets are glued to the surface of each front tooth needing to be corrected, and a wire is placed across the teeth. The ends of the wire are attached to the special brackets on the back teeth to hold the wire in place. The wire is then attached to each individual small bracket usually using tiny rubber bands. The larger back brackets gradually manipulate the pressure on the wire, which begins to alter the positions of the teeth.

Of course, the specific types of irremovable braces work in slightly different ways with varying benefits. Lingual braces are placed on the backs of the teeth so that they do not show. Damon braces do not require rubber bands; the wire attaches directly to the braces. This is more comfortable. The brackets can be made out of several types of materials such as metal, ceramic, or plastic.

How do removable braces work?

Removable braces are just now becoming popular due to their cosmetic value. Most removable braces are less visible, completely invisible, or only need to be worn at night. Rather than putting pressure on the teeth using wires, removable braces use clear mouth molds or trays to move or reposition teeth. Each clear tray is slightly different than the teeth so that the tray does not fit perfectly. The difference is so small that the teeth slowly conform to the tray. As soon as that happens, the tray is exchanged for another slightly different tray that moves the teeth a little more. This process is repeated until the teeth are in the desired positions.

The main type of removable braces is called Invisalign. Not all people seeking orthodontic treatment are eligible for Invisalign, but it is a great option for those who qualify. The clear molds are almost invisible, and the typical Invisalign treatment does not take any longer than a plan involving traditional braces.

Conclusion

To be best involved with your own orthodontic treatment or that of your child, knowing what braces do and how they do it is a must. By properly overseeing your own period of orthodontic treatment, you can ensure that your future will be filled with beautiful, perfect smiles.
