Excessive sweating (also known as hyperhidrosis) is a common problem that can not only be frustrating but embarrassing for those who suffer from the condition. There are numerous causes of this condition, but regardless of its origins, excessive sweating can be a difficult condition to deal with, especially in the summertime. In severe cases, it may even begin to significantly interfere with a person's social life.
For some people, a simple antiperspirant deodorant may be enough to keep excessive sweating at bay. However, even after experimenting with multiple brands, some individuals may find that their problems persist. Here are a few tips for choosing the right deodorant for patients who haven't had much luck thus far.
Prescription-Strength Deodorants
Over-the-counter antiperspirants use aluminum chloride to block glands from creating sweat. However, sometimes these products are not strong enough to completely prevent excessive sweating. In this case, a dermatologist can recommend a prescription strength deodorant as an option instead. These products contain significantly higher levels of aluminum chloride and typically begin working as soon as they are applied. Because they are so powerful, prescription deodorants only need to be applied once at bedtime—repeated daytime use becomes unnecessary.
While effective, prescription antiperspirants are generally more expensive than over-the-counter varieties. Additionally, many insurance plans will not cover the cost of these products.
Natural Deodorants
Individuals that have a hypersensitivity to chemicals don't necessarily have to rely on traditional antiperspirants to treat excessive sweating. Chemical-free natural deodorants are another option as well. The most common ingredients found in these products are witch hazel and corn starch—both of which help prevent and absorb sweat. However, natural deodorants are generally not as powerful, which means that users will likely need to apply these products more frequently than traditional antiperspirants.
Antiperspirant Wipes
Roll-on antiperspirants are possibly the most common form of deodorant, but there are other options as well. Perspiration wipes are convenient astringent products that are gentle enough to use on the face or other sensitive areas. Once users wipe the affected area with the product it immediately starts to block sweat pores. Antiperspirant wipes come in different strengths, and it is generally best to use a milder one first and then gradually progress to a stronger product if excessive sweating continues. Some products may be too powerful for users and can cause skin irritations, rashes, or redness.
