A fear of needles has kept more than just a few people from trying acupuncture, but is that fear misplaced? Although it’s natural to associate sharp objects with pain, acupuncture hurts a lot less than you might think. In fact, many people don’t notice the needles at all, especially when the ones used are quite thin.
However, just because acupuncture doesn’t hurt that doesn’t mean you won’t feel it. In fact, "feeling it” is an important part of the process. The Chinese term de qi , literally translated “the arrival of qi,” refers to the tingling, almost electrical sensation that occurs at the site where a needle is inserted. When this happens, the acupuncturist knows that they have located a key acupuncture point on the client’s body. This feeling can be intense, but it shouldn’t ever be painful.
