5 Questions to Ask Before Liposuction

Liposuction can be very helpful for getting rid of fat when diet and exercise alone will not help. However, this does not mean that everyone with excess weight should get liposuction. With this in mind, there are five questions in particular that you may want to ask yourself before pursuing liposuction.

  1. Can you maintain a healthy diet and exercise plan?

Liposuction is not meant to be an alternative to a healthy diet and an exercise program. While the procedure removes fat cells from the body, this does not mean that you can simply eat what you want after the procedure. The remaining fat cells can still expand.

  2. Do you have realistic expectations?

There are several types of liposuction available. Some are designed for contouring and sculpting as well, but liposuction can only do so much. If you have excessive skin or stretch marks, liposuction cannot help with this. It is important to ensure that you have realistic expectations for results.

  3. Have you considered the alternatives?

Liposuction is an invasive procedure, and although risks and complications are rare, there is always a possibility. There may be weight loss alternatives available to you that do not come with these risks and side effects. It is important to weigh all options carefully.

  4. Are you a good candidate?

This is something that only you and your physician can decide. If the physician is reluctant to perform the procedure due to increased risks or other reasons, it is important to really consider this procedure. Liposuction is not for everyone.

  5. Have you weighed the risks?

As previously mentioned, there are risks associated with any type of medical procedure. For some, these risks are a deterrent. If you are unfamiliar with all the risks involved or do not understand them, it is time for a talk with the physician.
