Body dysmorphia is a psychological disorder that causes a person to become obsessed with minor or imaginary defects in their appearance. This disorder is also sometimes referred to as dysmorphophobia, which means the fear of having a deformity. If you have body dysmorphia, it causes you to obsess over your appearance and body image, usually for several hours per day, to the point where it is negatively affecting your ability to function in your daily life.
When you have body dysmorphia, it is common to seek out numerous cosmetic procedures in an attempt to try to “fix” your perceived flaw. However, no matter what you do, you are never quite satisfied.
After being diagnosed with this disorder, treatment will usually focus on cognitive behavioral therapy, which aims to help you learn how to cope with your disorder in a healthy way. Medications may also be prescribed that can speed up the recovery process. In some rare cases, hospitalization may be required if you are in danger of harming yourself.
