What Are the Symptoms of Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer is any cancer that starts in the cervix, the connecting tube between the uterus and vagina. Although cervical cancer can generally be detected during annual screenings for the reproductive organs, it is still important to be aware of how cervical cancer presents. Early diagnosis often means a more successful treatment. Here is a look at the symptoms of cervical cancer.

Abnormality and Pain

Cervical cancer often shows no signs in the initial stages of development. Additionally, several gynecological infections may mimic the symptoms of such cancer. Know what is normal for your body, so that you know when something isn’t right. Even if the cause is an infection and not the beginnings of cancer, you should still see a doctor right away.

The most common symptom of cervical cancer is abnormal bleeding—such as after intercourse, between menstrual periods, or after going through menopause. Additionally, menstrual periods may involve heavier bleeding than you are accustomed to.

Abnormal vaginal discharge may also occur. It may be thicker or more mucus-like than normal, or it may have a bloody tinge. Pain in the pelvis, particularly during or after intercourse may also be indicative not only of cervical cancer but of other types of gynecological cancer.

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with your gynecologist right away.
