Spider Vein Prevention

Although spider veins are not painful, they can be unsightly and embarrassing. It's possible to treat them, and when they're caused by a temporary condition, like pregnancy, they typically clear up naturally after a few months. However, like most things, it’s easier and more cost effective to prevent them from forming in the first place. While there isn’t much to be done about some risk factors, like age, sex, or a family history of spider veins, there are some that can be dealt with easily and efficiently. If you’re worried about developing spider veins in your future, try these tips.

A Healthy Diet and Exercise

A healthy diet and regular exercise can have a big impact on spider veins, since obesity is a leading cause of them. Furthermore, abdominal pressure, like that caused by constipation, can put strain on the blood flow between the heart and the legs. Eating enough fiber prevents this condition, thereby keeping stress off the veins.

A sedentary lifestyle is another big cause of spider veins. This is especially a problem for people with jobs that require sitting or standing still for long periods of time. The lack of movement means your veins have to work harder to move blood around the body. Getting the right amount of exercise improves blood flow, which helps keep veins healthy. Moving around helps ensure your veins, and therefore the valves within them, stay strong.

Hormone Adjustment

Although hormones don’t seem like something easy to change, there are ways to keep them in check. Women going through menopause often take hormones like estrogen, which in large quantities can lead to spider veins. Additionally, hormonal birth control like "the pill" or certain IUDs can increase the risk for them as well. If women reduce or eliminate the use of treatments such as these, they may be able to prevent spider veins before they occur. However, it's important to note that you should always discuss a decision like this with your doctor. It's generally not a good idea to prioritize a cosmetic concern like spider veins over your physical health.

Prevention Complications

Unfortunately, experts don’t completely understand spider veins, so there’s no 100% effective way to keep them at bay. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that risk factors will catch up with you, so starting preventatives immediately is typically advisable. If you’ve already noticed family members with spider veins, chances are you’re next in line. Take the warning and keep your weight in check and keep your legs moving. If you know your veins aren’t as strong as they could be, talk to your doctor about what else you can do to help keep them healthy.
