Preventing Macular Degeneration

You will want to make several changes if you are concerned about macular degeneration or if the condition runs in your family. You can take a few steps to lower your risk of developing macular degeneration.

Avoid Cholesterol and Saturated Fats

Eating a diet high in cholesterol and saturated fats can increase the chance that you will develop macular degeneration. You want to start following a diet that includes as little bad cholesterol and saturated fat as possible. Cholesterol and saturated fats can start to clog the blood vessels in your eyes. This can cause macular degeneration.

Eat More Vegetables

You want to start including leafy greens in your diet. These vegetables actually work to protect your eyes because they help to eliminate harmful substances called free radicals, which can cause damage to your blood vessels. You specifically want to eat spinach, collard greens, and kale. There is some evidence eating more yellow vegetables, such as corn and carrots, will help as well.

Quit Smoking

Smoking tobacco causes damage to your blood vessels. Smoking can cause them to become thin and weak over time. This can directly contribute to the development of macular degeneration. Smokers are four times more likely to develop this condition. You want to quit smoking as soon as possible to reduce your chance of developing macular degeneration.

Wear Sunglasses

Something that can contribute to macular degeneration is ultraviolet light. This type of light is produced by the sun every day. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses when outside during the day. You should wear sunglasses even in the winter or during times when the sky is cloudy, because ultraviolet light can penetrate the clouds. Wear sunglasses that specifically state the lenses will block ultraviolet light.

Take Supplements

You might want to consider taking supplements in order to prevent macular degeneration. Certain vitamins and antioxidants have been linked to a reduced chance of developing the condition. You want to take supplements that contain vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, copper, and zinc. You might also want to take a supplement that contains omega-3 fatty acids. These supplements can potentially lower your risk of macular degeneration.

Stay Active or Exercise

You need to live an active lifestyle or exercise regularly to have the best chance of preventing macular degeneration. A lack of exercise can allow the blood vessels in your eyes to slowly narrow and become blocked. Exercising helps to keep your blood vessels clean and working normally. It also makes your body healthier so that you can avoid peripheral health issues that could contribute to macular degeneration.

Schedule Regular Eye Examinations

You should schedule regular eye examinations. These examinations can detect early signs of macular degeneration, allowing you to make changes to keep your eyes healthy before serious problems start. You should have an eye exam every two to three years if you are under age 65. If you are over age 65, then you should have an eye exam every year.
