Preventing Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, which is also referred to as ED or impotence, is an extremely common problem in men. In fact, it is estimated that 50% of men who are over the age of 40 have problems sustaining or getting an erection. Even though this condition usually occurs in older men, it can affect men who are in their 20s. The good news is that erectile dysfunction can be prevented. Below are some tips that will help prevent erectile dysfunction.

Watch Your Diet

A well-balanced diet will not only protect your overall health--it can also prevent you from developing erectile dysfunction. Studies have shown that men who follow a Mediterranean diet are less likely to develop impotence. A Mediterranean diet is one that is rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. It also involves cooking with olive oil and consuming fish two to three times per week. Wine can be consumed in moderation.

Fatty, fried, and processed foods can increase your chances of developing erectile dysfunction by decreasing healthy blood flow. Furthermore, these foods increase the risk of heart disease. Men who have heart disease are more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction.

Stop Smoking

If you are currently a smoker, you are increasing your chances of developing erectile dysfunction. Smoking impairs blood circulation. It also increases your chances of developing heart disease.

Manage Chronic Conditions

If you suffer from a chronic condition, such as high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure, you will need to focus on management. These conditions increase your chances of developing erectile dysfunction. Visit your doctor regularly to receive the appropriate treatment.

Limit Alcohol Intake

Mild to moderate alcohol consumption is not likely to cause impotence. Studies have, however, shown that chronic alcohol consumption can cause hormonal imbalances in men. This can increase your chances of developing erectile dysfunction.

Exercise

Men who are sedentary are more likely to develop erectile dysfunction. That is why it is important to include regular exercise in your daily routine. Aerobic exercise, such as running and swimming, has been shown to prevent ED.

Don't Stress

Stress increases adrenaline levels, which constricts your blood vessels. This will make it more difficult for you to get an erection. Take some time each day to de-stress. Reading, exercising, and meditating are some of the ways you can alleviate stress.
