Is There a Cure for Dry Mouth?

Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is not a condition so much as a symptom -- but this doesn’t mean it doesn’t cause its own range of symptoms. Often caused by medications or underlying medical conditions, xerostomia can be extremely uncomfortable and increase the risk of tooth decay. Although there are many treatment options, is there a cure?

In most instances, no, there is no cure for dry mouth. Xerostomia as a result of radiation therapy sometimes goes away after treatment is complete. When it is the result of a medical issue, your best option is to utilize a combination of treatments to try to keep it at bay as much as possible. However, is your dry mouth is the result of medication, talk to your doctor. It may take your body a little while to get used to the drug before your dry mouth goes away. Another alternative is changing the level of your dose, as long as it is still effective for your needs. Sometimes, switching to a different medication can do the trick as well. Talk to your doctor about what you can do about your dry mouth.
