Hypertension is also referred to as high blood pressure. If it is not treated, this condition can result in many health problems, such as heart attacks, strokes, blindness, and kidney failure. Fortunately, there are several ways that hypertension can be treated. Below are some hypertension treatment options:
Consuming Fish Oil
Fish oil supplements have recently grown in popularity. There has been evidence to suggest that they can lower blood pressure. Fish oil supplements may also reduce the risk of heart disease. Researchers believe that the omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil help treat hypertension and lower the risk of heart disease.
Exercising Daily
Many people with hypertension avoid exercise. However, this is one of the best things that you can do if you suffer from hypertension. You may be able to lower your blood pressure by simply exercising 30 minutes per day. Exercise not only lowers blood pressure, but it can also promote weight loss. People who are overweight are more likely to develop hypertension.
Limiting Alcohol
Small amounts of alcohol will probably not raise your blood pressure. However, excess alcohol consumption has been linked to hypertension. If you choose to drink, then you should not exceed more than two drinks per day.
Avoiding Smoking
Smoking raises blood pressure by causing your blood vessels to constrict. It can also harden your arteries. If you need help quitting, then you should talk to your doctor about effective smoking cessation techniques.
Stress Management
Chronic stress can raise your blood pressure. You can manage your stress by exercising and meditating. You should also make sure that you get plenty of rest. Sleep deprivation has linked to high blood pressure.
Taking Medications
In many cases, people will need medication in order to manage their hypertension. There are several medications that can treat this condition. Some of those medications include diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, and calcium channel blockers.
Another medication to consider is a diuretic. Diuretics are also referred to as water pills. They work by encouraging the body to excrete excess salt and water through the urine. Removing the excess water and salt can help lower blood pressure. This also makes it easier for the heart to pump.
Angiotension converting enzyme, or ACE, inhibitors work by causing the blood vessels to dilate or widen. This helps improve blood circulation and lower blood pressure. Beta Blockers work by blocking epinephrine. Epinephrine causes the heart to be faster and blood pressure to rise. Beta blockers slow down the heart and cause it to beat with less force. This lowers blood pressure.
Calcium channel blockers relax the muscles inside of the blood vessels. They may also lower heart rate. Studies have shown that calcium channel blockers may work better for older patients.
