Herniated Disc Treatments

Herniated discs can be treated in a variety of ways. If you think that you have a herniated disc, then you should see your doctor. Rest, exercise, medications, and physical therapy are some of the treatments that your doctor will probably recommend. If these conservative treatments do not work, then you may be required to have surgery.

Rest

In most cases, a herniated disc will heal on its own. In fact, half of people who have a herniated disc will completely heal within one month. One of the best things that you can do if you have a herniated disc is to rest. Your health care provider will most likely recommend that you rest for a short period of time and then gradually increase your physical activity.

Exercise

Even though resting is extremely important, you should still exercise if your doctor prescribes physical activity. Your doctor will most likely recommend that you perform exercises that target the core. Strengthening your core muscles will help protect your back.

Medications

Medication can help manage the pain of a herniated disc and reduce inflammation. Your doctor will probably recommend that you try an over-the-counter pain reliever first. However, if those do not help, then your doctor may prescribe muscle relaxants, antidepressants, or corticosteroids.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can benefit you in many ways. It helps alleviate the pain of a herniated disc. Physical therapy can also strengthen your body so that further injury can be prevented. There are several techniques that can be used in physical therapy. Some of those techniques include physical therapy, hydrotherapy, hot and cold therapy, and deep tissue massage.

Surgery

Even though herniated discs typically heal on their own, approximately 10% of people will eventually need treatment. If you have suffered nerve damage, then your doctor may recommend that you get surgery. Your doctor may also recommend surgery if your condition has not approved within four weeks.

The most common type of surgery performed on people who have a herniated disc is a discectomy. This is a procedure that involves making a decision and removing disc material. Laser spine surgery is another procedure that may be performed. Keep in mind that most doctors believe that nonsurgical treatments are best.
