Headache Home Remedies

Headaches are a painful but common nuisance that can strike at any time. The discomfort can disrupt your daily plans and be agonizing. Usually, medical attention is not needed for treating a headache, but that doesn’t mean you have to live in pain until it goes away.  Home remedy treatments can be an effective option for alleviating your pain.

You should always consult with your doctor before attempting any treatment option. Even natural remedies such as these can cause unintended side effects, such as an allergic reaction. Additionally, while some people experience personal success with these remedies, there are no scientific studies to support their widespread use.

Ginger

Ginger is recommended for instant headache relief, and there are a few different ways to prepare it. First, you can boil fresh crushed ginger with water, which you then filter and drink. You can also inhale ginger vapors by adding dry ginger powder or fresh crushed ginger to boiling water. Finally, make a ginger paste by adding dried ginger powder to warm water. Rub the paste over your forehead for headache relief.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is an effective home treatment for more than one type of headache. The oil is believed to relieve tension headaches, migraines, and sinus headaches. Mix three drops of peppermint oil with water and rub the mixture into your forehead or temples. You can also inhale the oil vapors by adding a few drops of oil for every 2-3 cups of boiling water.

Basil

Basil is thought to be great for headaches caused by tension and/or muscle tightness by working as type of muscle relaxant. Massage 3-4 drops of basil oil into your forehead or chew on some fresh basil leaves.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil works for both common headaches and migraines. The scented oil vapors can be inhaled. A second option, is to apply the oil externally by gently rubbing a couple drops into your temples. Lavender oil can also be added to a hot foot bath. It is believed that the hot water draws the blood to your feet, thereby reducing the tension in your head. Lavender should not be consumed by mouth.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is believed to relieve migraines. Chamomile slows down the activity of your nervous system, producing a sense of calmness and relaxation. Additionally, chamomile tea lessens pain and inflammation caused by a headache. In order to experience effective results the tea should be consumed continuously throughout the day.
