Do Polyps Cause Cancer?

Polyps are growths of abnormal tissue that can form on almost any organ throughout the human body. In most cases, these growths are completely benign, meaning that they are not cancerous. However, it is possible for polyps to contain precancerous cells that can eventually become cancerous. For this reason, certain kinds of polyps (such as colon polyps) are removed upon detection to screen for any cancerous or precancerous cells that may be present. However, since the risk of cancer is so small, if polyps are small and not causing any symptoms, it is usually not necessary to remove them. This is especially true for nasal polyps and endometrial polyps.
