Bipolar disorder is a chronic illness that is characterized by drastic mood swings and emotional extremes. At one end of this spectrum is mania or hypomania, which are emotional states of intense energy, creativity, impulsiveness, and euphoria. At the opposite end of the spectrum is depression, with symptoms of intense sadness and hopelessness.
