Are Ovarian Cysts Painful?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop in the ovary. They typically form during ovulation, which occurs each month when the ovary releases an egg.

Ovarian cysts are common, and many women who have them don’t experience symptoms. Cysts are normally harmless and naturally disappear within a few months.

Most of the time ovarian cysts are harmless and don’t cause symptoms, but if they do become a problem they can be very painful. A sharp or dull pain that comes and goes may be felt in the lower abdomen on the side of the cyst.

A cyst that twists an ovary can also cause pain along with nausea and vomiting. Some less common symptoms of an ovarian cyst are pelvic pain, pain during sex, and pain during your period.

A ruptured cyst can cause sudden and severe pain. If you start to experience pain, especially if it starts suddenly, see your doctor.
