4 Tips for Dealing with Pubic Lice

Public lice are also known as crabs or crab lice. An infestation of these lice can lead to discolored skin and secondary infections if they are not treated. Pubic lice can also affect other body hair, such as the eyebrows, eyelashes, mustaches, armpit hair, or beards. They can also spread very easily and cause severe itching. Fortunately, there are several ways that you can treat pubic lice:

  1. Using Shampoos and Lotions

There are a number of over-the-counter shampoos and lotions that can be used to get rid of pubic lice. Rid and Nix are examples of some of the over-the-counter products that you can use. You may need to use this treatment for a week or more before you see results.

  2. Washing Everything

Make sure that you wash your clothing, bedding, towels and anything else that has been contaminated with pubic lice. Place them in the washing machine and use water that is at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit. You should machine dry the items after you have finished washing them. If you have items that have been contaminated with pubic lice and you cannot wash them, then you should dry-clean them, place them inside a plastic bag, and store them for at least two weeks.

  3. Using Lindane

Lindane is another prescription lotion that can be used to treat pubic lice. However, doctors will usually only recommend this after all other treatments have been unsuccessful. Children younger than 2 years of age should not use Lindane. Furthermore, this treatment is not intended to be used by elderly patients or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor to see if lindane is a potential treatment option for you.

  4. Removing Eggs

Shampoo and lotion kill the lice, but you may still be able to find eggs on your hairs. You can remove these with a fine-toothed comb. You can also use tweezers and your fingernails.
