Binge Eating Symptoms and Diagnosis

Persons experiencing binge eating may exhibit specific symptoms or warning signs of the disease. These are signs that are often noticed outwardly by family members and friends of someone who is struggling with binge eating; however, the symptoms may not seem initially linked to an eating disorder, such as depression. Binge eating truly affects all areas of a person's life. It is equally as common in men as it is women.

Binge eating is a type of over-eating. Physical symptoms are typically the result of obesity complications. These symptoms can be extremely serious if left untreated. They can also be symptoms of other medical conditions so it is important to be assessed by a physician to determine a correct diagnosis and seek treatment. Only a medical professional can diagnose binge eating or serious symptoms like depression.

Prominent symptoms include:

  • loss of ability to determine hunger
  • uncomfortable fullness after eating
  • lightheadedness or loss of balance, especially fainting
  • may go to extreme or strange lengths to hide food or food purchases
  • following abnormal rules in an attempt to control eating
  • feelings of loss or being out-of-control
  • feelings of depression, shame, and guilt, especially regarding food
  • strange eating habits or food rituals

Other symptoms of depression may be prominent for those suffering from binge eating, as well as withdrawal from friends and family.
